Kitahara Hakushu Memorial Park

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of renowned poet Kitahara Hakushu’s birth, Kitahara Hakushu Memorial Park (consisting of Hakushu’s birthplace and a museum) was opened in 1985 to release and display his valuable literary materials and relics. Constructed right beside the house where he was born, the museum’s first floor displays materials relating to the history and folklore of Yanagawa’s riverside district, while the second floor is dedicated to Kitahara Hakushu’s life story and significant achievements. The museum’s exterior “namako” walls are made with mud and plaster and are unique to Yanagawa, giving visitors a sense of the city’s poetic sentiment, which was also the background of Hakushu’s works. A special exhibition is held in November along with the Hakushu Festival.
