1 Day in Yame : A traditional indigo dyeing experience from Japan’s Edo Period (Part 1)

1 Day in Yame : A traditional indigo dyeing experience from Japan’s Edo Period (Part 1)-1

Kurume Kasuri is a unique type of textile invented in Fukuoka. It uses completely natural indigo dyes that achieve the deep colors of other Japanese indigo products; however, rather than dyeing the cloth itself, bundles of cotton thread are dyed in the indigo pots. Because the dye cannot reach each individual fiber of the bundled threads, the threads are produced with patterns of white and blues, which when woven together, create uniquely beautiful patterns in the finished cloth. In its prime, Kurume Kasuri was used to make durable clothing for the common people, and today we see it making a comeback in stylish accessories and products made for modern lifestyles.

While technology has helped reduce the labor intensity of most types of textile production, there are still Kurume Kasuri workshops that use skilled craftsmen through almost all of the 30 steps of the process of making fabric. Meet the artisans who are carrying on this Japanese traditional craft, visit their workshops, and even get hands-on with their bold colored indigo dyes to create your own special memories of your visit to Fukuoka.

Cap off your day with a stroll through a perfectly preserved Edo era merchant district and a relaxing overnight stay in century-old refurbished machiya townhouse.
