A complete guide to the attractions of Fukuoka Tower, including fees, access, restaurants, and more!
Fukuoka Tower takes pride of place as Japan's tallest seaside tower at 234 m tall. From highlights such as popular night views, seasonal lighting displays, and the Lovers' Sanctuary, to basic information on admission fees, access, and parking, this article covers the key points to help you enjoy Fukuoka Tower to the fullest.
What kind of place is Fukuoka Tower?
Fukuoka Tower stands loftily by the sea as a symbol of Fukuoka City. At 234 m tall, it is Japan's tallest seaside tower. It was constructed as a monument for the Asian-Pacific Exposition – Fukuoka (Yokatopia) held in 1989. Its sharp, equilateral triangular prism form is covered with 8,000 half-mirrors that reflect the sea and sky, earning it the affectionate nickname “Mirror Sail.”
The observation deck on the top floor offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Fukuoka's cityscape and Hakata Bay. In addition to hosting various seasonal events, you may even get to meet the official mascot, “Futa,” if you catch the right timing.
[Attraction 1] Best seat in the house for spectacular views! A 360-degree panoramic observation deck
Fukuoka Tower's observation deck consists of three floors: 116 m above ground (Observation 1F), 120 m (Observation 2F), and 123 m (Observation 3F).
From the main viewing deck on Observation 3F, you can take in sweeping views across Fukuoka City, Hakata Bay, and the distant Sefurisanchi Mountains. Enjoy spectacular vistas with an overwhelming sense of openness that you can never experience on the ground.
We highly recommend visiting at the magic hour at dusk, when you can witness both the beautiful sunset, painting the sky orange as it dips into the sea, along with the night views as the city lights begin to twinkle. Fukuoka Tower's night view has been selected as one of Japan's top 100 night views, enveloping your night in a romantic atmosphere.
Don't worry even if you visit during bad weather with hazy outdoor views! The observation deck screens a time-lapse video, “Fukuoka Panorama,” condensing 24 hours of views from the tower into a film lasting just 4 minutes. It is a digest showcasing the city's expressions captured under the best conditions. It has been highly rated for offering visitors the best, moving views regardless of the weather.
[Attraction 2] A floor that becomes the starry skies?! "Sky Illumination," a display of light
If you visit the observation deck at night, look down at your feet. The floor is paved with phosphorescent stones, creating a magical “Sky Illumination” that evokes the image of stars in the night sky. It is also a popular photo spot where you can take pictures on the glowing floor against the backdrop of the beautiful night view spread out before your eyes.
It is rumored that heart-shaped stones are hidden among the phosphorescent ones. If you can find them all, even more happiness may come your way!

Take up the challenge of going up 577 steps in Ultra Stairs Climbing Event!
This is a signature event held every May and October. The emergency staircase, which is usually off-limits, is exclusively opened to the public for this competition. The staircase covers a staggering 577 steps from the first floor to the top floor at 123 m above ground! After reaching the top, you can soak in the breathtaking views spread out below and enjoy a satisfying sense of accomplishment that you cannot get by taking the elevator. Since participants can climb at their own pace, first-timers and young children are also welcome!
[Attraction 3] Seasonal “Light Art” that add color to Fukuoka's nights!
One of the most popular attractions is the illumination displays projected onto 8,000 half-mirror panels covering the tower's exterior, which change every season. The entire tower becomes a giant canvas, with light art depicting seasonal motifs adding color to Fukuoka's night sky. Illuminations are typically turned on from sunset until 11:00 p.m.
- Spring -
The entire tower is bathed in the lovely pink of cherry blossoms, using delicate light to depict the journey from full bloom to falling petals. A photogenic scene unfolds, featuring cherry blossoms at night that are as beautiful as viewing the actual blooms.
- Summer -
From mid-June through Tanabata, the Milky Way twinkles across the night sky, creating a romantic atmosphere. In August, the illumination features cool, refreshing lights that evoke the image of goldfish in water.
- Autumn -
Coinciding with the mid-autumn moon, September's light-up display features a Japanese-style motif of the moon and rabbits. October brings a complete change of atmosphere as the tower is decked in playful Halloween lights.
- Winter -
From early November, the tower transforms into a giant Christmas tree! January showcases the first sunrise of the year, while February is based on the theme of Valentine's Day. Each visit will leave you with a feeling of warm coziness.
[Attraction 4] Pledge eternal love at the Lovers' Sanctuary
Fukuoka Tower is a popular spot for dates and has even been selected as a “Lovers' Sanctuary.” Its entertainment floor on Observation 1F is especially packed with romantic touches to enhance the mood for love! Couples can pledge eternal love, draw omikuji (paper fortune slips) written in Hakata dialect, and enjoy other playful experiences for a fun date.
Heart-shaped installation
The heart-shaped installation is perfect for taking commemorative photos as you pledge your love! When two people hold hands and touch the switches on either side, the area is illuminated in sparkling heart-shaped lights. At night, the glowing heart and beautiful night views create the perfect backdrop for stunning photos! A smartphone stand is also provided for selfies so that couples can capture their best shots together.
Oath Fence
The "Oath Fence" is found near the heart-shaped installation. There is also a romantic belief that if a couple who purchases a heart-shaped padlock called a “love lock" and locks it here will be bound together forever! Choose from 10 colors of "love locks." This place is popular not only among couples, but has also attracted attention as a sacred spot for "Oshikatsu" (activities to support one's idols), where fans can select their favorite color to pledge love for their idols.
[Attraction 5] Feast on the views along with gourmet delights unique to Fukuoka Tower!
Fukuoka Tower features two dining options: Refuge Sky Cafe & Dining, where you can enjoy meals while taking in spectacular views from 120 m above ground, and Restaurant Renga Club, a casual restaurant where you can tuck into Hakata's cuisine.
Refuge Sky Cafe & Dining (Observation 2F)
The restaurant, fully encased in glass on all sides, comes with premium seating where every single spot offers spectacular views. Escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life in this open atmosphere that resembles a sky garden.
During cafe hours, we recommend sweets such as the Rainbow Roll Parfait, which is a miniature replica of Fukuoka Tower at 1/1,000 scale, and the soufflé pancakes. Main courses including pasta and curry are also available.
The lights dim after sunset, allowing you to savor a proper full course dinner while gazing at romantic night views.
*Admission to the observation deck is required to dine at the restaurant.
Restaurant Renga Club (First Floor)
Located in Fukuoka Tower's entrance hall, this casual restaurant offers easy access without requiring the observation deck fee. Enjoy set meals, pasta, curry, and ramen made with generous helpings of fresh local ingredients from Hakata. It is perfect not only for dining but also for taking a break or meeting up with others.
