Hakata Basami

博多鋏

A Legacy Forged in Steel

The history of Hakata Basami stretches back some 700 years, beginning with the “Tang scissors” brought to Hakata by a merchant named Xie Guoming from the Southern Song Dynasty.
Once offered as gifts to the shogunate, these scissors were crafted by Hakata’s master swordsmiths.
Their extraordinary sharpness comes from the same techniques used in sword forging—particularly the forging and welding of the soft iron base (jigane) and hard steel blade (hagane).
Every pair reflects the precision and pride of generations of artisans.
