Jojima Onigawara
城島鬼瓦
Roof Guardians with Fierce Expressions
Tile making in Jōjima began after the Battle of Sekigahara, under the rule of the Arima clan in Kurume.
The region became known for tiles of refined luster, elegant form, and excellent durability, used in shrines, temples, and traditional houses across Kyushu.
Among them, the Oni-gawara—decorative roof-end tiles depicting fierce demon faces, clouds, or chrysanthemums—serve as powerful talismans to ward off evil and protect the household.
