Traditions Alive with Creativity

Originating in the late Meiji period in Tobata, the “Magoji Dako” takes its name from its creator, Mr. Magoji Takeuchi.
With its strong coastal winds, Kitakyushu has long been a region where kite flying flourished. Skilled artisans competed to design kites that represented their hometowns — from the blowfish of Moji to the kappa of Wakamatsu — or even ones bearing their own names, each with its own elaborate form and theme.
The Magoji Kite often features a cicada motif, said to depict the tsukutsukubōshi species.
