Kokura Ori
小倉織
Cotton Weaving Loved Since the Edo Period
Kokura-ori is a thick, durable, and smooth cotton fabric known for its elegant striped patterns.
The stripes, woven with pre-dyed threads, create a refined and dignified impression while producing a sense of depth through subtle color gradations.
First used for garments such as hakama, obi, and haori in the early Edo period, Kokura-ori was even favored by Tokugawa Ieyasu for his hunting coat.
Although production ceased in the early Showa era, it was revived in 1984 and continues to captivate people in Japan and abroad, with new generations of weavers carrying the tradition forward.
