Hassaku no Uma
八朔の馬
A Simple Gift Wishing for Children’s Strength
The “Hassaku no Uma” is a straw horse offered as a gift to celebrate a boy’s first seasonal festival on Hassaku (the first day of the eighth month in the old lunar calendar).
This custom, which dates back over 300 years, is still practiced at dawn on September 2 each year.
Each horse carries a figure of a famous warrior, such as Kuroda Nagamasa, symbolizing hopes that the child will grow up strong and brave.
Made entirely of local straw, the craftspeople soak and soften it before weaving it into shape, preserving the handmade tradition that continues to charm locals today.
