Bold Banners Celebrating Boys’ Day

The Chikugo Festival Banners trace their origins to the Edo period, when they were displayed during Tango no Sekku (Boys’ Day).
These striking banners—usually displayed in pairs—are beloved symbols of the Chikugo region, celebrated for their vibrant dyeing and heroic designs.
In the Asakura (former Haki Town) area, the abundance of pure river water from the Chikugo River made it ideal for dyeing, helping the craft flourish.
Though smaller, indoor versions are common today, families still proudly display grand banners featuring samurai such as Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Katō Kiyomasa, wishing for the strength and courage of their sons.
