Aakasaka Ningyo

赤坂人形

Simple, Warm Expressions in Clay

Akasaka Ningyo originated in the mid-Edo period in the Akasaka pottery district, once serving the Arima clan’s official kiln.
The nickname Tetepoppo—a local Chikugo term meaning “awkward person”—reflects their rough-hewn charm.
Made from unglazed clay with simple coloring and visible seams from the molds, these dolls embody rustic warmth and human character.
