Eight things to do at Bengala Village - from hot springs and saunas and restaurants serving local produce to craft beer making workshops!

Bengala Village is a place you must stop by if you’re visiting Yame. The vast grounds of this multipurpose facility offer everything from parks and markets to natural hot springs and craft beer.
In this issue, we’ll describe how to enjoy “Yame Time” with activities, food, healing and health that typify the Yame region by introducing eight things you need to do at Bengala Village. So how will you spend your time?

What is Bengala Village?

Bengala Village is located just a 10 minute drive from the Yame interchange on the Kyushu Expressway. This multipurpose facility offers a natural hot spring, a restaurant that uses local ingredients, a fitness gym, and more.
The name Bengala Village is said to come from the color of the reddish-brown Bengara earth used for the walls of numerous historic buildings and homes in the Yame region. The same Bengara earth is actually used for the walls in Bengala Village as well.
At the village’s cafe, you can enjoy Yame Matcha tea smoothies, sparkling Yame tea, and craft beer, all made with ample Yame tea, a local specialty. This space offers activities, food, experiences, and healing and health-related services for everyone to enjoy, irrespective of age, and of course for children and families too.

Time to savor the taste of the local specialty, Yame tea.

Gather Drip is a cafe where you can enjoy the delicious taste of Yame tea, a local specialty, to your hearts content, through such original drinks as their Yame Matcha Smoothie and their Sparking Yame Tea, as well as alcoholic beverages such as craft beer.
We especially recommend the Yamecha Gyokuro Set which lets you taste the tea leaves themselves, something you can’t do elsewhere. Gyokuro, considered one of Japan’s highest quality green teas, is cut off from sunlight for about 20 days before harvesting to bring out a deeper flavor. The flavor is further brought out by slowly opening the tea leaves in lukewarm water, resulting in tea which offers a hint of sweetness. Enjoy the changing flavor through the first and second brews in the glass cups. Once the leaves become softer through several brews, you can even eat them! You can of course eat them as is, or dip them in ponzu soy sauce, rock salt, or broth, to fully enjoy the flavor and nutrition of the tea leaves. So why not take the time to experience the a completely new way to enjoy green tea.

Experience delicious local flavors on this restaurant that focuses on local production and consumption

At restaurant Gala & Dish, diners can enjoy a wide ranging menu featuring western and Japanese style cuisine, including Italian, made with fresh local vegetables and livestock. Here we introduce three of the most popular dishes!
We particularly recommend the colorful lunch plates on the lunch menu, sets that feature fresh local vegetables and freshly baked bread. Particularly, the Yame Fukufuku Buta Hamburger Lunch Plate that features the pride of this restaurant, a juicy and gently sweet hamburger made with Yame Fukufuku Buta (pork), a local branded pork raised in the abundant nature of Joyo-machi in Yame city.
Our next recommendation is the Somarian Curry made with Shiitake mushrooms produced in Yame. An original curry recipe also offered at the Soma-no-Sato gift shop in the Yabe district of Yame city, the delicious taste, which perfectly mixes the rich umami flavor of the mushrooms with the curry spices, is sure to be addictive.
For dessert, you have to try the Yame Matcha Chocolate Fondue, which features matcha chocolate melted over seasonal fruits, cake, and dumplings. The rich, aromatic chocolate sauce matches the other ingredients perfectly, resulting in a confection that typifies the Yame green tea region.

Experience making craft beer at the Yame Brewery

The Yame Brewery, a caft beer brewery located within Bengala Village focuses on producing craft beers that leverage the specialty products of Yame, such as their Pilsner made with Yame tea and their Fukamushi IPA. Here, visitors can reserve a spot at their brewing workshop and try making their own special beer while following the instructions of the brewer, creating the recipe and grinding the malt. Participants can even make their own labels, so we recommend this for anniversaries or celebratory gifts.

Spend an unrivaled moment conditioning yourself at the hot spring and sauna!

The Natural Hot Spring Bengala-no-Yu features basic alkaline water, which is effective for muscle pain, sensitivity to cold, and fatigue. The large main bath also features a cold water bath, a jet bath, an electric bath, and an outdoor bath.
They also feature a special sauna that can fit about 25 people. Here are three conditioning points that ensure even sauna-lovers enjoy.

(1) The sauna contains both an Iki automatic Löyly sauna by Metos, and a Bonatherm sauna. It is designed to warm your body no matter where you sit.
(2) The spacious cold water bath is kept quite chilled!
(3) The Totonoi Terrace let you enjoy a happy moment in the gentle outdoor breeze.

The hot spring building also features a comic book corner, a kids corner, a tatami mat terrace, and a coworking space, providing various ways to enjoy yourself. Enjoy the ultimate moment conditioning yourself in this luxurious environment.

Get maintenance done on your body through the body care and fitness options.

Seeing as you’re here, why not exercise with abandon to build a healthy body? Sports Fitness Gym Personal Fit is a facility located within Bengala Village that offers a variety of training and sports activities. The largest training facility in the region, they offer options for everyone from beginners to experts, including cardiovascular exercise, hydraulic machines, weight machines, and free weights.
We also recommend their Body Care service if you’re worn out from the busy day to day. Make a reservation by phone in advance, and then purchase a ticket from the machine next to the front entrance of Bengala Village.

Find hand-picked items from Yame at the select shop

Head to the select shop Disgabary if you’re looking for reminders of your trip or fresh foods. The shop offers a selection of products from Yame, including fresh local vegetables and premade meals.
Among them, we particularly recommend the craft beer. These original beers, brewed at the Yame Brewery within the Village, make use of the produce of Yame, such as Yame tea and fruits. They also offer season-limited varieties.
One item we want you to try at home is the Kashiwa-meshi Maze Gohan no Moto (Mixed Chicken Rice Flavoring), that features seasonal chicken boiled with Yame Shiitake mushrooms and bamboo shoots in sweet soy sauce flavoring. Just mix it with steamed white rice and dig in! You can also buy premade packs of the Somarian Curry we introduced before.

Kids and adults will have a blast!

One of the appeals of Bengala Village is the ability of people of all ages to enjoy themselves. For the playful children, the Fuwa Fuwa Dome trampoline located in the outdoor market plaza is quite popular (for children aged 3 to 12).
Enjoy a brief rest in the tatami space after washing off your sweat at the hot spring. The Manga Corner (comics corner) offers nearly 1,000 comic books for you to borrow and read at your leisure while relaxing in the gently swaying hammock.
The restaurant also offers a kid’s menu, with options such as Kid’s Lunch and Kid’s Curry, so you can share a moment  enjoying delicious meals with the whole family.

Have fun playing for the entire day at Bengala Village.

Bengala Village offers a rich array of activities, including shopping, workshops, and food. If you want to visit, why not go the extra step and check into a nearby hotel so you can really enjoy every aspect, from morning till night?
