TOTO, a Technological Marvel from Kitakyushu to the World

TOTO, a company that has become a household name around the world, has a rich history dating back to 1917. As Japan was still lacking sewer infrastructure then, TOTO began manufacturing flushable toilets and sanitary ware with a vision to promote a healthy and refined lifestyle for the people of Japan. With the advent of modernization, TOTO made impressive strides in bathroom fixture technology, products, and services, ushering in a new era of luxury and comfort. To commemorate its centenary, TOTO established a museum to showcase its founding philosophy, history, and legacy, acknowledging that they are critical aspects in maintaining the company's progress in line with society's evolution. As a pioneer in the development of high-tech toilets that prioritize sustainability and eco-friendliness, TOTO has taken an approach to toilet design that has been driven by a desire to reduce the environmental impact of sanitation systems while improving the user experience. In the process, its efforts in this area have earned it a reputation as a leader in this field.

One of TOTO's key areas of focus is water conservation. Toilets are a major source of water usage in households and public spaces, and TOTO has developed advanced technologies to reduce water consumption. One of its most popular products is the TOTO Washlet, a high-tech toilet seat that incorporates a bidet function, a heated seat, and a range of other features. The Washlet uses a mere 5.5 liters of water per flush, compared to the average toilet's consumption of 13.5 liters. This significant reduction in water usage has made the Washlet a popular choice for environmentally-conscious consumers. And when it comes to flushing systems, one of the most notable of these is the "Tornado Flush", which uses a powerful vortex of water to clean the toilet bowl more effectively than traditional flushing methods. This system uses less water than traditional flushing methods, which helps to conserve water and reduce the strain on local water resources.

The Washlet also features a range of other technologies that contribute to sustainability. For example, the toilet seat's lid opens and closes automatically, reducing the risk of contamination from manual contact. The Washlet's air deodorizer eliminates the need for chemical-based air fresheners, reducing the environmental impact of toilet maintenance. Additionally, the Washlet's seat and lid are coated with a special material that resists bacteria and stains, reducing the need for harsh chemical cleaners.

In addition to toilets, TOTO has also implemented water-saving technologies in its other products, such as faucets and showerheads. For example, the TOTO EcoPower faucet uses a self-generating hydroelectric system to power its sensor, eliminating the need for electrical wiring or battery replacement. This system also regulates water flow, reducing waste and improving efficiency.

Furthermore, besides its water-saving all-in-one toilets, another way that TOTO has worked to reduce its environmental impact is by facing challenges with its complex manufacturing process when it comes to imperfect products. The company has adopted a "closed-loop" approach to production, which involves recycling and reusing materials at every stage of the manufacturing process, and the installation of solar panels at many of its facilities to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and lower its carbon footprint. A good example is how TOTO in the United States sought to recycle these products instead of sending them to landfills. Instead of chasing an unrealistic single solution for everything, their approach has consisted of multiple small solutions over time to improve their manufacturing facility’s innovativeness, sustainability, and competitiveness.

For instance, one effort was a pilot collaboration with the University of Georgia to rebuild oyster beds along the Georgia coast with crushed porcelain. This option ended up not being implemented, but the initial approach of creating synergies with other companies that could take advantage of the scraps proved successful in two other projects. First, TOTO crushed fired porcelain and offered it to Atlanta suppliers for backfill in construction projects or as an aggregate base for road construction. Second, TOTO partnered with Crossville, a Tennessee-based tile manufacturer, to recycle TOTO’s fired scrap porcelain into tile. After tests, Crossville found that the constituent components used by both companies were similar, allowing TOTO’s crushed porcelain waste to be used as a resource for raw material to produce porcelain tiles. This is a tremendously significant milestone which now means that 100% of TOTO USA’s porcelain scraps are being repurposed, fulfilling their zero waste goals. 

Kitakyushu is a bustling city located in the northern part of Kyushu, Japan's southernmost main island. Two of the city’s greatest landmarks side by side is the perfect setting for an idyllic stroll through the city's contrasting old and new cultures.

Get a leisurely tour of the castle and enjoy the stunning night view from the top floor. On the same floor, the castle tower bar awaits to provide you with an unforgettable experience. The bar offers original cocktails, beers, wines, soft drinks, and snacks in an extraordinary space where you can savor the breathtaking view of Kokura. The entrance fee of 3,000 yen includes one drink, and it's best to reserve in advance. Note that preschoolers are not allowed, and admission tickets are available on-site only if there are seats left.
 

Another must-visit spot in Kitakyushu is Mojiko Port, a charming harbor district that was once the center of the city's international trade. The port is lined with red brick buildings that hark back to Kitakyushu's industrial past, and the air is filled with the scent of sea salt and fresh seafood. Visitors can wander through the narrow streets, stopping to admire the historic buildings and sample local delicacies such as grilled squid and octopus balls. Mojiko Port is also home to a number of art galleries and museums, including the Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art and the Mojiko Retro Observatory.

A bit further north from Mojiko Port we can find Mekari Shrine, a hidden gem that's well worth visiting. This peaceful shrine, located at the foot of a hill, facing the sea and right next to the impressive Kanmon Bridge that connects Fukuoka with Yamaguchi Prefecture, has a long history that goes back to the 3rd Century. As you wander through the shrine's serene grounds, you'll be struck by the tranquil atmosphere and the beauty of its traditional Japanese architecture. If you're seeking a moment of tranquility and reflection, a visit to Mekari Shrine is not to be missed.

The relationship between TOTO and Kitakyushu goes beyond a mere relationship between a manufacturing company and a local government. It’s more of a cooperative relationship: TOTO’s contribution to the prosperity of the local community also extends to strengthening local relations by establishing a research and development center, which brings together specialist researchers and engineers and is constantly updated with the latest technology and knowledge. Today, TOTO's Kitakyushu plant manufactures toilets, sinks and other plumbing-related products that are used all over the world. And through this cooperative relationship with the local community, the company is also involved in local environmental protection activities, as well as cultural initiatives with TOTO GALLERY·MA, TOTO Publishing, and TOTO Museum Factory tours.

In a bid to raise awareness for environmental conservation and showcase their cutting-edge technology, TOTO launched the "Toilet Bike Neo" in 2011. The three-wheeled motorcycle was fueled by biogas produced from animal waste, a sustainable and eco-friendly source of fuel. The "Toilet Bike Neo" was commissioned to promote TOTO's environmental program, the "TOTO Green Challenge," and demonstrate their commitment to being an environmentally-friendly company. The bike embarked on a 1,400 km journey from Kitakyushu to Tokyo, taking approximately a month to complete. The journey was not only a testament to TOTO's innovative spirit but also a bold statement on their dedication to creating a more sustainable future.

However, this cultural awareness goes well beyond the borders of Kitakyushu or even Japan. Recognizing that the foundation of its corporate activities is the sustainable development of society, the company channels its management resources towards conducting social contribution and community coexistence activities that aim to resolve local and global social issues. TOTO has established core issues such as preserving the water environment, creating a sanitary and comfortable living environment, and developing the next generation, as key areas of focus. In light of increasing global social issues, the TOTO Water Environment Fund supports The Organization for Industrial, Spiritual and Cultural Advancement’s (OISCA) activities, which emphasize promoting environmental conservation and protecting the basis for life, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. The fund has helped improve school facilities in Indonesia damaged by floods due to coastal erosion, and has supported environmental education and tree-planting activities. The project has raised awareness of protecting the environment and promoting sustainability within many communities.

The museum is located just a short 14-min bus ride from Kokura Station. Alternatively, you can take the Kitakyushu Monorail to Kawaraguchi Mihagino Station and then walk for about 10 minutes. From Fukuoka City, it's just a 15-min shinkansen ride from Hakata Station to Kokura Station.
