Nyoirinji Temple (Frog Temple)
如意輪寺(かえる寺)
An Instagram-worthy spot where you can be soothed by adorable "frog" objects.
Seieizan Nyoirinji Temple, also known as “Yokoguma Kannon,” boasts Japan’s only standing statue of Nyoirin Kannon, a wish-fulfilling form of the deity Kannon who is always depicted in a seated pose. This is a designated cultural property of Fukuoka Prefecture dating from the Heian Period (794 to 1185). Nyoi means “as desired,” so this is a deity that fulfils wishes.
Also known by the nickname “Kaeru-dera” (Frog Temple) for the 10,000-odd frog statues placed around the grounds, this is a hot spot for Instagrammers. All the frogs have a humorous and soothing look. According to legend, the chief priest once brought back a number of frog statues from a trip to China and their numbers gradually increased ever since. This is a temple that aims to be a fun, open place for everyone and today, it is loved by local and foreign tourists alike.
This is a must-see “powerspot” with benefits for road safety, longevity, finances and more, based on plays on the word kaeru such as “buji kaeru” (go home safe), “genki ga kaeru” (restore health) and “okane ga kaeru” (improve your financial situation).
You can also enjoy the flowers of the four seasons here. A wind chime festival is held here in summer when thousands of wind chimes fill the grounds, creating an ethereal scene.
