Introduced by Kyoto artisans in the mid-Edo period, Hakata Hariko (papier-mâché dolls) are still handmade using age-old techniques.
Layers of Japanese paper are molded over wooden or plaster forms, sun-dried, split open, and reassembled.
The process is meticulous, and the final vibrant colors—made from pigments mixed with glue—bring to life auspicious figures such as tigers and daruma dolls, long cherished as symbols of good fortune.
