Hakata Okiage
博多おきあげ
The Warmth and Elegance of Layered Fabric
Okiage refers to a form of oshie (raised fabric art) in which cotton and cloth are layered to create delicate three-dimensional pictures.
In Hakata, it was customary to give okiage as a celebratory gift upon the birth of a girl.
Known for the fineness of its hand-painted faces, Hakata Okiage traces its roots to court ladies of the Edo period and was later popularized by Chika, the wife of painter Murata Toho, in the late Edo era.
By the Meiji and Taisho periods, it had become part of women’s cultural education in Hakata.
Today, the craft is lovingly preserved by the Shimizu family.
