Folk Clay Dolls Rooted in Everyday Life

The folk clay dolls that formed the foundation of Hakata Ningyo originated with Seisuke Ohashi, who founded a doll studio called Hitokiyo in Imajuku in 1905.
These figures often depict themes tied to local life, beliefs, and folk traditions—such as Sarumen masks for fire and theft protection, Sasano Saizō figures, and cheerful Otafuku faces.
Simple yet heartwarming, these Imajuku Ningyo have long been beloved by the community.
Today, the molds once cherished by Seisuke and his successor Shigeo are carefully preserved and used by Shigeo’s niece, who continues to carry on the tradition.
