Messengers of the Tenjin Deity

The “Ki-uso” is a wooden carving depicting a uso bird perched gracefully on a branch.
According to legend, in 1591, a flock of uso birds drove away a swarm of bees that had been disrupting the reconstruction of Dazaifu Tenmangū Shrine. Since then, the bird has been revered as a messenger of the deity Tenjin.
The finely carved wings of the Ki-uso are created using a single chisel, resulting in delicate, curling layers of wood. These figures are also featured in the shrine’s “Uso-kae” ritual held on January 7, and are cherished as lucky charms symbolizing good fortune.
