Amagi Shibori

甘木絞り

Amagi Shibori is a traditional tie-dyeing technique that developed in Asakura City during the late 18th century.
Fabric is tightly bound with thread and then dyed in deep indigo, creating intricate patterns.
From the Meiji to Taishō eras, Amagi Shibori—along with Hakata Shibori—was known collectively as Chikuzen Shibori and became one of Japan’s leading textile industries, even exporting abroad.
Although the craft declined around 1951 due to economic hardship, war, and Westernization, individual artisans preserved the techniques, leading to its revival in 1995 by the Amagi Shibori Preservation Society. Today, the Amagi Shibori Liaison Council continues its production and promotion.
