Kurume Okiage
久留米おきあげ
The Fabric Art of Oshi-e Hina
Okiage refers to the Japanese craft of oshi-e, in which cotton is layered under vibrant fabrics to create raised, three-dimensional pictures.
Popular designs include Kabuki actors and elegant dolls for Hina displays or decorative paddles (hagoita).
It is said that this art form was brought to Chikugo as a souvenir culture by artisans from the Arima domain during the Edo period.
Okiage production thrived throughout the Meiji and Taishō eras, employing specialized craftsmen who painted the faces. Today, the tradition is lovingly carried on by local women artisans.
