Beauty and Function in Every Rib

The Chikugo Wagasa is a masterpiece of both elegance and engineering, consisting of over 100 intricate handmade steps.
The craft is said to have begun in the early 17th century when a priest of Hiyoshi Shrine started making umbrellas as a side occupation.
The region’s access to quality bamboo via the Chikugo River, nearby washi (Japanese paper) and persimmon tannin producers, and the abundance of skilled artisans fostered a thriving umbrella industry.
Though production declined after WWII, the techniques are now carefully preserved by a local association dedicated to keeping this beautiful tradition alive.
