The Distinctive “Navel” of Yame Spinning Tops
The Yame Wagoma is said to have originated from techniques introduced by Sugawara no Michizane, though several theories exist.
Its distinctive central indentation, called the “navel,” is a remnant of pre-Meiji designs.
Crafting a single top requires straight, 30-year-old wood that is air-dried for nearly a year.
To ensure long, steady spins, the wood’s natural core must align perfectly with the top’s axis—an art that demands a master’s precision and experience.
