Okawa Chokoku
大川彫刻
Power and Refinement in Every Cut
The Ōkawa Chokoku tradition features intricate openwork designs carved from thin boards of Yakusugi cedar, highlighting the beauty of the grain’s fine lines.
Rooted in the Tachikawa school of the Tachibana domain, this craft flourished in the late Edo period, especially in temple and shrine decorations.
By the early Shōwa era, the refined techniques were also applied to residential interiors, combining artistry with practicality in Japanese architecture.
