The Craft of Spinning Performance
The history of spinning tops in Japan dates back about 1,300 years, when bamboo “Tang tops” were brought from China as children’s toys.
The first uniquely Japanese top, the Hakata Koma, appeared in the late 17th century.
Distinguished by an iron pin at its core, this design improved balance and stability during spinning, reducing wobble and enabling more precise control—eventually inspiring the art of spinning-top performance still admired today.
