The Natural Charm of Tuff

The Yame Stone Lantern is made from local tuff, a light, soft volcanic stone.
Though difficult for intricate carving, it is durable against heat and cold, quickly develops a mossy patina, and blends beautifully with gardens—making it ideal for lanterns.
During the Edo period, many stonemasons were active in this region for bridge construction, which led to the flourishing of stone lantern production.
