The Elegant Weave of Igusa Straw
Kakegawa Tatami Weaving, used for Buddhist altar mats, has long been practiced throughout the Chikugo region, famous for its high-quality igusa rush.
Known for its refreshing fragrance, vivid colors, and tightly woven texture, Kakegawa mats embody the essence of Japanese craftsmanship.
About 40 years ago, women in Ōki Town commonly wove them as part-time work, and even today, they remain a beloved summer tradition in many homes across Chikugo.
