Course Overview

Ainoshima Island, located in Shingu Town, Fukuoka Prefecture, is a scenic island floating in Hakata Bay. It’s easily accessible — just a 20-minute ferry ride from Shingu Fishing Port. The island is rich in history, featuring ancient stone walls and burial mounds that you can explore while enjoying a leisurely walk. With its beautiful coastline and peaceful atmosphere, Ainoshima is the perfect place to relax and unwind away from the bustle of daily life. The island is also famous as a stopover for migratory birds. Come and experience the slow island time surrounded by both nature and history.

Course Route:
Nishitetsu Shingu Station → Shingu Coast → Shingu Ferry Terminal → Board Town Ferry “Shingu” (20 min) → Ainoshima Port → Wakamiya Shrine → Tōmibansho Ruins → Inoura → Megane Rock Observatory → Ainoshima Stone Mound Cluster → Ainoshima Pearl Bay → Shima-no-Eki Ainoshima

  • Wakamiya Shrine

    Wakamiya Shrine

    This shrine is deeply cherished by island residents as their guardian deity.
    According to Japanese mythology, Princess Toyotama and Prince Yamasachihiko met and fell in love here.
    The shrine enshrines Toyotama-hime and Tamayori-hime, the mother of Japan’s first emperor, Emperor Jinmu.
    For this reason, it is known as a guardian deity of safe childbirth.
    A local tradition remains where people carry the leaves of the Yuzukazura vine(Litsea Japonica) as a charm for a smooth delivery.

  • Tomibansho Ruins

    Tomibansho Ruins

    Located on a high hill overlooking the Genkai Sea, the stone walls are all that remain of this Edo-period lookout post, built in 1640 to monitor foreign ships during Japan’s isolation era.
    Two officers and three guards kept daily watch, reporting any sightings to the Fukuoka Domain or Nagasaki magistrate.
    In 1976, a lighthouse was built on the site to continue guarding ships’ safety to this day.
