Wakamiya Shrine

This shrine is deeply cherished by island residents as their guardian deity.
According to Japanese mythology, Princess Toyotama and Prince Yamasachihiko met and fell in love here.
The shrine enshrines Toyotama-hime and Tamayori-hime, the mother of Japan’s first emperor, Emperor Jinmu.
For this reason, it is known as a guardian deity of safe childbirth.
A local tradition remains where people carry the leaves of the Yuzukazura vine as a charm for a smooth delivery.
