Tomibansho Ruins

遠見番所跡(新宮町相島)

Located on a high hill overlooking the Genkai Sea, the stone walls are all that remain of this Edo-period lookout post, built in 1640 to monitor foreign ships during Japan’s isolation era. Two officers and three guards kept daily watch, reporting any sightings to the Fukuoka Domain or Nagasaki magistrate.
In 1976, a lighthouse was built on the site to continue guarding ships’ safety to this day.
