Yame-Fukushima was established as a castle town just before the Edo period. After the castle’s closure, it flourished as the commercial center of the Yame region. The town’s white-plastered buildings (made with a technique called igura-zukuri) remain as they were during that period, and in 2002 it was designated as a National Important Traditional Architecture Preservation Area. Various community development groups, including the Yame-Fukushima Agricultural Tourism Promotion Council and the Yame-Fukushima Townscape Preservation Society, along with local NPOs, are collaborating with both the public and private sectors to preserve and perpetuate the townscape.

<Activities>
Yame’s tea is renowned as some of the highest quality in all of Japan. At the Yame Tea Café in the Yame Yokomachi Machiya Koryukan, visitors can savor exceptional teas such as Gyokuro Susuri-cha and Dentou Hon Gyokuro. Additionally, there are a variety of other hands-on activities available, such as making a shawl using the traditional Kurume Kasuri textile technique or indigo dyeing at a kasuri workshop.

<Stay>
Stay at a traditional private residence that has been converted from either a storehouse built in the early Meiji period or a townhouse built in the early Showa period. Adorned with traditional bamboo works, Kurume Kasuri textiles, bamboo lampshades woven by local artisans, and cypress wood baths crafted by expert craftsmen, the rooms of these accommodations exude a sense of handmade warmth. Guests can also enjoy breakfast prepared with locally grown vegetables, fruits, shiitake mushrooms, dried sea weed from the Ariake Sea, and other delicacies from the nearby mountains and sea.
