The Itoshima area, not far from Hakata and Tenjin, is attracting attention nationwide as a destination to both live and travel. Here you will find a large number of appealing spots to enliven your trip along the coast of the beautiful blue sea.
In this article, we introduce a number of new standard destinations that you have to visit on your trip to Itoshima, including photogenic cafes, restaurants that embody the delicious flavor of local production and consumption, healing power spots, and activities in the vastness of nature.

Extraordinary glamping in the highlands at Aloma Olive

This private glamping site is limited to one reservation per day. Visitors here can enjoy an extraordinary experience with the spacious lawn and garden and the 120 olive trees planted on the slopes. Located in the forested highlands approximately 40 minutes by car from the Fukuoka city center, the site offers a wide view of the ocean from Itoshima. The glamping dome is designed after ancient Greek architecture, featuring an attractive blue-based design. The high ceilings and built in air conditioning make for a comfortable space.
Meanwhile, the imported Finnish sauna offers the ultimate in relaxation. The steam in the sauna is infused with the facility’s own aroma oil to help you relax both your mind and body.
For dinner, enjoy a hearty barbecue featuring high quality meats, such as Itoshima Black Beef, and local fresh vegetables.

Trek to see the amazing scenery at the Bozuiwa rock on Mt. Jubo

Mt. Jubo is one power spot you definitely need to try if you like trekking. The trail up the mountain is well maintained, so you can climb safely. The massive, mystical rock you will find at the top is known to the locals as Bozuiwa, or the monk rock, and if you climb on top, you will be rewarded with a stunning 360 degree view from Itoshima, including the Genkai-nada Sea. Let nature empower you, and make sure to capture the view in a photo !
Then, why not relax for a moment at Mamushi-no-yu, a hot spring resort near the trailhead, and then enjoy shopping or a meal at the farmer’s coop that offers fresh local vegetables and crafts.

Be invigorated by the God of marriage and beautiful ocean views at Hakoshima Shrine

Hakoshima Shrine is located in a small rocky island poking out from the shoreline of Itoshima. This shrine, with its adorable little Torii gate, enshrines the Shinto god of love, and many worshippers visit here to pray for help with romance and marriage.
But the best thing about the location is the ocean on three sides, offering wonderful views throughout the year. Particularly, mystical streaks of light often appear at sunset between October and February, known as the Angel’s Staircase, and you can reach the shrine via the beach itself at any time other than high tide.

Come for both the new summer greenery and the autumn leaves! Raizan Sennyoji Daihioin Temple

The Raizan Sennyoji Daihioin Temple boasts a history of roughly 1,300 years. The temple is home to several items designated as Important Cultural Properties by the national government, such as the Mokuzo Senjukannon-ryuuzo and and the Mokuzo Seigashonin-zazo, wooden Buddhist statues.
The grounds of the temple feature a massive maple tree aged approximately 400 years, designated as a natural monument by the prefecture. The beautiful tree sparkles with new greenery in early summer, and breathtaking autumn leaves in November. There are other ancient trees located at Kaminari Shrine, just a short climb from Daihioin, such as a 900 year old ginkgo tree and a 250 year old momi fir, which turn red and yellow in the fall.

Enjoy thrilling activities in the forest 700 meters up at Forest Adventure Itoshima!

Located approximately one hour from the Fukuoka city center, Forest Adventure Itoshima offers a variety of activities, including elevated walks, in a forest at an elevation of 700 meters.
Their Adventure Course is a challenging route that makes good use of the different elevations in the forest. You will alternatively be thrilled or feel like a bird when you see the views from 15 meters up in the trees or rush down the 110 meter zip slide.
There is also a Canopy Course that is lower and less challenging for beginners or visitors with children. Here you can even enjoy another zip slide that reaches a total of 130 meters.
And of course the abundant nature here is one of the biggest appeals, with rhododendrons blossoming in the springtime, verdant greenery in the summer, and the colorful autumn leaves in the fall. There is also an observation deck offering the beautiful scenery of Itoshima, so make sure you bring your camera.
*We recommend reservations in advance.

Inside the restaurant you can try a variety of sweets made with those Tenjo eggs. Many people come back over and over again for their soft ice cream made with a generous amount of Tenjo eggs. Their puddings and rolled cakes also make great gifts.

Enjoy legendary Taiyaki ice cream for a snack at the Tonarino Cafe

In Minakazedai, Itoshima, you can find soft ice cream that is all the rage for being cute and auspicious. Medetai Ice Cream (Auspicious Ice Cream) at Tonarino Cafe (The Next Door Cafe) uses a traditional Japanese confection called a Taiyaki as the cone, and it comes in plain, strawberry, matcha, and chocolate flavors.
Other heart grabbing and beautiful sweets include their Yukimi Ice Ichigo (Snow Ice Strawberry) that features a sublime marriage between Gyuhi soft mochi cakes and rich soft ice cream, and their Busakawachan that will make you laugh with its comical appearance. They also offer an ample drink menu, including their matcha drink that matches the rich and fragrant Yame matcha tea with subtly sweet milk, and coffee with ice cream floats.

Enjoy seafood rice bowls at the Itoshima Shokudo that are very delicious and worth taking a photo

Itoshima Shokudo is so popular that diners are lined up even on weekdays, but still, this is the first place you should go if you want to try Itoshima Kaisendon, or seafood rice bowls. The seafood rice bowls and seafood chawanmushi (a steamed savory pudding) made with a rich portion of freshly caught seafood are like jewel boxes from the sea. The quantity and flavor will satisfy both your stomach and your eyes.
There are about 30 different types of rice bowl dishes on the menu with a focus on seafood, but also including meat and other limited choices, so you’ll surely have trouble choosing. And no matter how often you come, there will always be something new to try.
The presentation here is also quite beautiful to behold, and no matter what angle you photograph your meal from, the result will be a masterpiece. Due to the extreme popularity of this restaurant, we recommend a visit when you have spare time to wait.

Sooth yourself with coffee and the beautiful forest air at Mori to Coffee (Forest and Coffee)

Based on a concept of returning to yourself and heading to the woods, this coffee shop and roaster offers coffee in the forest of Itoshima. The husband and wife owners brew each cup in the hope to rediscover yourself with the soothing forest and flavors of coffee when your busy days have made you lose sight of yourself. Take a break and not only unload the fatigue of your trip, but maybe even detox your heart.
This is also a good spot to grab a present for yourself or a gift from among their offerings, such as coffee beans, drip bags, and other seasonal items. And you can of course enjoy a cup of coffee hand brewed from selected beans.
*There are no restrooms here.
