Onsen Facilities by Theme | Private Baths
A private bath (also known as a family bath) lets you enjoy a hot spring in complete privacy, without worrying about others around you. It’s a great choice not only for families with small children and couples, but also for anyone who wants to indulge in a relaxing soak on their own.
In recent years, more facilities have introduced private baths with open-air tubs or even saunas, offering a wider range of ways to enjoy your time. Some places also allow tattoos in private baths, so if that matters to you, be sure to check in advance.
Genjii no Mori Nature Learning Village
Located about a 90-minute drive from the city, this nature-filled complex is centered around Genjii no Mori Station and includes a campground and bungalows. Accommodation options are plentiful, from dome houses tucked into the forest to lodges and trailer houses.
In 2025, a new private reservable bath with its own private sauna (reservation required) was added and has quickly become a popular highlight. Enjoy a blissful moment of deep relaxation in an authentic Finnish-style sauna experience.
Kouno-yu Onsen
The cold mineral spring water flowing into the baths is known for its naturally high radon content. In addition to overnight stays, day-use visits are also welcome. For an additional ¥400 on top of the large public bath admission, guests can use the facility’s single private bath for 60 minutes.
Take your time and enjoy the radon spring in a fully private setting—highly valued for its potential benefits both for bathing and for drinking.
Harazuru Onsen Yagurumasou
Managed by the owner, who holds a certified onsen sommelier qualification, this facility offers the luxury of fresh, free-flowing hot spring water. You can enjoy it in the large public bath as well as in one of the two private reservable baths.
After your soak, why not explore the area with a rental bicycle or try activities such as canoeing? It’s a perfect spot for a “best of both worlds” trip, combining hot springs with outdoor adventures.
