Mt. Tateishi

Mt. Tateishi is one of Itoshima's top sights. At 211m above sea level, even beginners and children can easily enjoy the climb up. From the top, a breathtaking view of sea, sand, greenery and sky unfolds. It takes less than 30 minutes to climb to the top, and many people stop by as part of their sightseeing tour. The surrounding area is packed with attractions, including the "Keyo no Oto" basalt cave, which is also a nationally-recognized natural monument as well as many restaurants offering fresh seafood from the Genkai Sea.     Keya Camping Ground
     

    Close to the trailhead for Mt. Tateishi and Keya Beach, this is a convenient place to stay for climbing and sea swimming. Tent sites and bungalows are available, and tents, barbeques and other useful items can be rented.

    Keya Ryokan Gai

    There are many inns and restaurants in the Keya area where you can enjoy fresh seafood on the shores of the Genkai Sea that it came from. The Mt. Tateishi trailhead and Keya Beach are adjacent to each other, making this a tourism hub in the Keya area.

      Keya Beach

      Boasting some of the clearest waters of any beach in Fukuoka Prefecture, this is known as a beautiful stretch of sand, selected as one of the "Top 100 Bathing Beaches" in Japan. During the swimming season, beach houses open along the strand and jellyfish nets are set in the water so you can enjoy swimming with peace of mind.

    • Keya Oto

      Keya Oto

      The largest of the three major basalt caves in Japan and a nationally-recognized natural monument. Hexagonal and octagonal pillar-shaped rocks are layered on top of each other, rising above the rough waves of the Genkai Sea. The cave, created by sea erosion, is 64 meters high, 10 meters wide, and 90 meters deep. It opens to the Genkai Sea and presents a mysterious sight.

      The oyster huts that line the shores of the ports of Itoshima are known as the "Itoshima winter's tale" (opening only from mid-October to the end of March). You can partake in fresh, nutritious Itoshima oysters at a reasonable price in such establishments as they are run by the fishers themselves.       Upon returning from the summit of Mt. Tateishi, drop by a restaurant in the Keya Ryokan Gai to enjoy some fresh seafood. At a reasonable price, you can sample the catch from the Genkai Sea in the form of a jumbo seafood and rice bowl or a traditional kaiseki multi-course meal.
