Itoda Gion Yamakasa

糸田祇園山笠

Started in the Edo period, Itoda Gion Yamakasa is a festival designated as the town’s Intangible Cultural Property for its 300 plus years of history. The annual outing takes place on the 2nd Saturday and Sunday in May every year.

The highpoint of the event is marked by the marching of massive Yamakasa floats measured at nine meters by two meters, over 2 tons in weight. The celebration takes place for two days as men carry the floats through the streets of Itoda Town. The opening day comes to an end as they proceed down the main street toward the Festival Park set up in the city center. It is truly a picturesque scene as they arrive and gather together at the Park as the sun sets in the distance. The beaming light reflecting off of the colorful Yamakasas creates an ethereal atmosphere as the first day comes to close.
