Umi Hachiman Shrine Release Party

宇美八幡宮 放生会

Mid-Autumn Festival to pray for a good harvest with compassion for all life.

Housoukai, an autumn festival held every year on 15 and 16 October at Umi Hachimangu Shrine, the god of safe childbirth and child rearing. This traditional festival is held to show compassion for all life on earth, forbid the killing of living creatures, give thanks for being kept alive and pray for a good harvest. The Umi Kagura, dedicated at the Kaguraden, is a designated Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of Fukuoka Prefecture. The elegant dances accompanied by the sounds of flutes and drums, and the myths of the distant past told over the mouths of the performers, attract people's hearts. The town's Commerce and Industry Festival is also held at the same time, selling local specialities and attracting many worshippers with around 100 stalls each year.
