Tochoji Temple

東長寺

A must-see for history buffs! Japan's oldest esoteric Buddhist temple, founded by Kobo Daishi.

It is said to have been built around 806 by Kukai (Kobo-Daishi) after he had completed his training in Tang China. He prayed for the long transmission of esoteric Buddhism in the East.
Tochoji Temple is also known for the tombs of Tadayuki Kuroda II and Mitsuyuki III, lords of Chikuzen Province. The 16.1 m high wooden Shakyamuni Buddha, known as the Fukuoka Daibutsu, is the largest seated statue in Japan. In the temple storehouse is the Senju Kannon Bosatsu (Thousand-armed Goddess of Mercy), carved from a single piece of cedar wood in the Heian period and designated as a national important cultural property. The Setsubun Festival, usually held in February, is a traditional event that has been handed down since the Muromachi period (1336-1573). The festival is a great success, with the Seven Gods of Good Luck, Otafuku, red and blue demons appearing for the bean-throwing ceremony, and attracts many worshippers every year.

Tochoji Temple is one of the venues for the light-up event. The event was held with the aim of familiarising more people with Hakata's historical landscape, and has now become a typical autumn event in Hakata.
