Rice Planting Festival at Mt. Kubote
求菩提山 お田植祭(県指定無形民俗文化財)
At Mt. Kubote, which is know as a mountain for asceticism, mountain priests used to hold a festival unique to Buzen called “Matsue” to pray for an abundant harvest. One of the events, the Rice Planting Ritual, has been passed down for generations and is still conducted today as the Rice Planting Festival, a Municipally Designated Intangible Folk Cultural Asset.
The festival is held on the grounds in front of Kunitama Shrine’s middle sanctuary on Mt. Kubote on March 29 every year. A humorous dance accompanied by song that presents the story of farm work - from seeding in the Spring to harvest in the Fall - is performed for the gods and attracts many spectators.
