Maruyamazuka Kofun

丸山塚古墳

The Maruyamazuka Kofun, designated as a National Historic Site, is one of the Yame Kofun Cluster. Built around the late 6th century, this large circular burial mound has a diameter of about 33 meters. During an excavation in 1979, wall paintings were discovered inside the stone chamber, featuring continuous triangle patterns and warabite (fern-spiral) motifs drawn in red, yellow, and green pigments. These findings revealed it to be a rare decorated tomb in Fukuoka Prefecture. Although the surrounding moat and embankment are no longer visible, they are believed to have existed in the past.

Cherry blossoms and rural scenery surround the tumulus, offering views of the cityscape and the mountains beyond. Near the nearby tea fields, you can also enjoy the sight of beautiful rapeseed blossoms in season.
