Spectacles Bridges

めがね橋

In the space between Chikuzen Iwaya Station and Daigyoji Station, there are three bridges called Kongono, Narao, and Matsuo, which have been designated as Modern Civil Engineering Heritage. Also, along National Route 211 in the Haru area there are slightly smaller bridges. These bridges connect the mountain areas of the JR Hita Hikosan Line, and these beautifully-constructed bridges were made in 1888 using a triple stonework masonry style, and because they have three ’rings’ they are sometimes called ’spectacles bridges.’ Seeing the trains run over them in the autumn leaves season or the snowy winter season is essential. In early December the bridges are lit up, creating a fantastic spectacle in the clear night air which might remind you of the ”Galaxy Express.”
