November Grand Sumo Tournament in Kyushu

The annual November Grand Sumo Tournament takes place at Fukuoka Kokusai Center, beginning on the second Sunday in November and lasting 15 days. The night before the tournament begins, competitors from Kyushu are introduced in a ceremony and receive especially loud cheers at this local tournament!
The November Grand Sumo Tournament has been the stage for a number of famous showdowns since its establishment in 1957, including the bout between brothers Wakanohana Masaru and Takanohana Koji who created a big Sumo boom at that time. You can see the competitors on the bus, at restaurants, and other places around town in their yukata robes during the tournament.
