A Deep Dive into Japanese Culture in a Town of White-Walled Storehouses
The Chikugo-Yoshii district retains a layout dating back to the Edo period, featuring white-walled earthen storehouses that became widespread around the Meiji period and waterways constructed by generations of workers.
Visitors can experience the water-centric lifestyle of Ukiha at lodging facilities made from historic private homes that are over 100 years old.
<Activities>
Each room has its own unique character. In addition to private spaces where you can enjoy löyly sauna and bartending experiences, there are hands-on workshops such as candle making with hazero wax, which give you a taste of the history of Chikugo-Yoshii. You can also take part in a relaxing zazen meditation experience at a Zen temple at the foot of the Minoh Mountain Range overlooking the city, or enjoy fruit picking to savor the seasonal fruits of the “fruit kingdom” of Ukiha.
<Stay>
The “Minamo” inn is a boldly renovated merchant house from the Taisho era. The guest rooms, blending past and present, exude a warm, wooden ambiance. Breakfast is served in the Kagamida Residence, which is constructed the Edo period. Guests start their day with local cuisine made from ingredients that reflect the passion of the growers and the rich natural bounty of the land.
