Japanese Grenadier Anchovy Fishing

エツ狩り

Japanese grenadier anchovy are said to be the leaves of reeds which Buddhist monk Kobo-Daishi (or Kukai) released into the Chikugo River that turned into fish! The anchovies are a rare species of fish only found in the Lower Valley of the Chikugo River and can only be caught when they swim up the river to spawn. (A River Festival also takes place there.)
