Kiji guruma
きじ車
The Beloved Wooden Toy of Kyushu
The Kiji-guruma is a wooden pheasant cart toy, symbolizing good fortune, marriage, and family harmony.
Celebrated in the poetry of Kitahara Hakushū, it became known throughout Japan.
Crafted from dried pine or paulownia wood without the use of nails, each piece is shaped entirely with a single hatchet called a sen-gatana, then hand-painted.
Variations in wheel number and design appear across northern Kyushu, where some regions call it Kiji-uma.
