Cleanse yourself with the water from the mouth of a sea bream Touka Ebisu-jinja Shrine

鯛の口から出ている水で清める十日恵比須神社

In 1591, Takeuchi Goemon was returning home from a visit to Kashii-gu/Hakozaki-gu, when he happened upon a statue of the god Ebisu washed up on the beach. He picked this statue up, and following this in January 10th of 1592 he constructed and began operating the Touka Ebisu-jinja Shrine, dedicated to the god Ebisu. At present, the enshrined deities are Ebisu, god of business prosperity, and Daikoku-sama, god of marriage. The water of the ’chouzuya’ (a Shinto place for ritual cleansing of hands/mouth when visiting a shrine) comes out of the mouth of an auspicious sea bream. The water used here is ’Matsubara Water’, a type of water from a well dug during the early Meiji Period in order to secure good-quality drinking water.
