八幡古表神社 夏季大祭

At this shrine you can see the very rare shrine ritual held once every 4 years in which wooden god statues dance and do sumo wrestling. It is just held this year. The origin of the shrine goes back to 545A.D., and gods’ sumo wrestling 744A.D. The statue of EmpressJungu mounting a black cow, 47 statues of dancing and wrestling gods and dancing and sumo wrestling event of gods statues, these three are designated as National important cultural properties. This shrine also has many dresses and swords offered by the successive lords of Nakatsu of Oita prefecture adjacent to Yoshitomi-cho.
