Singing Sand at Anego no Hama Beach

姉子の浜(鳴き砂)

Anego no Hama Beach is a beach of “singing” sand that makes a squeaking sound when people walk on it.
It is said that singing sand exists only on clean beaches, and that 90 such beaches used to exist in Japan. Today, however, just 20 singing sand beaches remain due to environmental changes, making beaches like Anego no Hama a rarity.
Although the sand at Anego no Hama Beach also stopped “singing” in the early 1960’s, it started to sing again in around 1994 thanks to the diligent efforts (such as cleanup activities) made by the local citizens. Such cases are apparently rare even in Japan, so why not seize the opportunity to listen to the recovered “song” of the sands while taking in the beautiful view of the Genkai Sea or the sunset?
