Studio Nirenoki (elm)

工房 楡の木

A studio with a large elm at the back of the building. “I started with furniture sales. While fixing furniture, I began to create it and opened a studio”, says the maker, Mr. Shunichi Nakamura. With the joinery technique, he makes products carefully one by one taking advantage of the material’s beautiful wood grain and natural shape.
At the studio, many original products from furniture to toys are displayed. Especially, the woven wooden chair (pictured above) is excellent, and has received the jury’s special award at the Okawa Kasho no Yumehaku in 2004. Since the curved woven wood part lets sitters get relaxed, they can keep sitting on it comfortably even for a long time.
The works are sold at events around Japan as well as the studio. The popular product at the events is the egg-shaped ornamental ball. It has been selected as one of the 48th Japan’s Recommended Gifts and Souvenirs in 2008 (Heisei 20). The Setaka Town’s specialty, camphor is put in the camphor ball. The aroma is great, and it is also effective in preventing moths. Besides, there are abundant varieties like trick boxes, toys, chopsticks, and wooden notebooks. The products can be purchased at the Setaka.com (a store at JR Setaka Station) and on the home page (*The home page is only for browsing. Please call to make an order.) as well.
