Togo Shrine

東郷神社

Togo Shrine is dedicated to former Fleet Admiral and General Commander of the Imperial Japanese Navy Heihachiro Togo, who brought about the end of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905. The shrine rests atop Mt. Omine and has a full view of the Genaki Sea, which was the site of the Battle of Tsushima.
The shrine was planned in 1922 thanks to the advocations made by a veterinarian from the town of Tsuyazaki in Fukutsu City by the name of Masahiro Abe, with whom former Admiral Togo was familiar. However, the shrine was actually built after Togo’s death.
Former Admiral Togo was good at English, so all of the fortunes (purchasable at the shrine) have an English translation on the back. Since Togo won an unrivaled number of battles, it is also said that visitors to the shrine will have better “sho-un”, or luck in succeeding at things.
Togo Shrine hosts a Spring Festival (May 27) and a celeration of the former Admiral’s Birthday (December 22) every year.
