Eel Seiro Mushi (eel steamed in a bamboo basket) is a local dish that is synonymous with Yanagawa. The area has long been known as a source of wild eels, and is so famous in Fukuoka Prefecture that people say “Yanagawa is the place to go when it comes to eels."
First, the rice is covered with sauce and steamed, then topped with broiled eel and shredded egg and steamed again. By steaming it twice, the eel gets a slightly burn exterior and fragrance, and the meat stays juicy. The whole eel is steamed so it stays hot until you finish eating. The taste of the rice soaked in the sauce and the flavor of the eel are an exquisite fusion. This local dish, which has been served since the Edo period, was recognized as a “100-year food” by the Agency for Cultural Affairs in FY2021.
Yanagawa City is dotted with long-established eel restaurants with a long history. The vermilion-lacquered seiro used in many restaurants has the name of the restaurant engraved on the side. Each restaurant offers different tastes and menus, ranging from light and simple to rich and thick. The depth of the flavors is also an attraction, as the secret sauce and unique grilling method have been passed down for many years, and the flavors are never the same. Please visit again and again to find your favorite flavor.
