The rice candy of the Omatsushita Ame Honkan is sweet, but not too sweet like sugar. It’s mildly sweet.

At the Omatsushita Ame Honkan, using the traditional cooking method with 130-and-more-year history, the sugar-free rice candies have been manufactured. The ingredients are only rice and malt. The malt is added to the steamed rice, and the juice is simmered and kneaded. The rice candy is said to help mothers make more breast milk, and it can also add modest sweetness and glaze to simmered foods for the finishing. The nearby Motoyoshiya (an eel restaurant) also uses the candy regularly as a hidden flavor.
