Eel Restaurant Ganso Motoyoshiya Main Location

元祖 本吉屋 柳川店

Ganso Motoyoshiya is a long-established unagi (eel) restaurant that has been in business for over 300 years! It was this restaurant that first introduced Yanagawa’s now famous dish Unagi no Seiro Mushi (eel steamed in a bamboo basket) to the world in 1615! Since then, the restaurant has faithfully preserved its traditional secret sauce and cooking technique.
Seiro mushi was invented as a way to eat eel and rice together warm. The dish is made by placing fresh, lightly grilled eel on top of rice coated with sauce and steaming it twice in a bamboo basket. The steaming domestic eel from Miyazaki or Kagoshima perfectly char-grilled golden brown and bright yellow ribbons of egg makes the mouth water. The sauce also has a sophisticated flavor that is not too strong.
The restaurant’s recommendations include the Seiro Mushi Teishoku set (pictured above) that comes with vinegared eel and eel-liver soup.
If you want to enjoy eel to the fullest, try the Hae Teishoku set, the name of which comes from the line of a poem written by Yanagawa’s pride and joy, poet Kitahra Hakushu. The set is a combination of the 2-layered Toku Seiro Mushi special and Shirayaki Oroshi (vinegared eel and Japanese raddish).
Another reason why meals at this restaurant are so enjoyable is because of the old-fashioned aura of the retaurant with its partially thatched roof and well-maintained garden.
In addition to the main location, there are branches in Okinohata (Okinohata, Yanagawa-shi; 0944-72-9070) and Iwataya Department store in Fukuoka (Tenijn, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka-shi; 092-725-9484).
